During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani committed to “transform” America's largest city, ushering in “a fresh chapter” and an audacious commencement to his tenure.

An Unprecedented Leader

The 34-year-old political star, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not compromise my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's rise as a victory over the status quo.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Dynamics

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly productive.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rat infestation, repairing potholes, and ensuring reliable subway service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, citing record low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with 301 homicides reported.

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
