The fast bowler Expected to Feature a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

The pace bowler has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an impressive average.

The Australian selection chief Bailey has declared that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not only his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a key capacity. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 forcing him out of multiple domestic campaigns in four years.

He emphasized he would be bold in recovery efforts in his recovery plan to ensure his availability for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

The talented all-rounder was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
