Security Guidance for MoD Staff
In a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on claims that MoD officials have been instructed not to discuss secret information while riding in China-made vehicles.
He said that the ministry is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, however stressed that safety is a issue in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting Ministry of Defence technology into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, because of the increasing threats of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in protected areas. This is a wise and sensible thing for everyone concerned about safety.
When it was put to him that it would be wise for the MoD to cease using every cars from China, the minister replied: That is precisely what we’re investigating at the moment.”
Broader Defence Background
The announcement comes as reports from Norway and Denmark have warned the United Kingdom to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to switch off buses and bring chaos to transport systems.
