Crew Member Reveals Depression Following Wave of Online Abuse Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also included high-profile passengers.
The mission was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash eclipsed her moment under an landslide of gendered hatred.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on female health science and operated research during the flight, said every professional achievement – from her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is best known for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of sexual assault survivors.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was paused after an attack during her university years, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
The Fog Begins to Lift
Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She concluded that despite the negativity, considerable good had emerged from the mission, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
Flight Details
The fully automated New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the internationally recognized boundary of outer space.
The diverse crew also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a private space firm launched by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
