A bettor profited close to $500,000 from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was made public, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Wagers on Polymarket, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the month's conclusion surged in the period preceding former President Trump stated on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

One account, which became a member recently and made four bets, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a initial bet of $32,537.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a cryptographic address for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

But the market's assessment had climbed to 11% by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment just before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on non-public details," commented a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other traders also earned significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Elected officials are beginning to pay attention.

A bill presented on Monday would prevent public officials from participating on prediction markets if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in the United States, with traders able to predict everything from sports outcomes to politics.

The industry were examined under the Biden administration. However it has experienced less resistance during the present political climate.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are more ambiguous rules in the forecasting space.

An official representative for Kalshi said their site "explicitly prohibits such activities of any form."
